Chasing Gains? FOMO Could Cost You Big

Market rallies are exciting, indices climb steadily, portfolios turn green, optimism returns to investor conversations, newspapers highlight new highs, and your good old investor friend calls to tell you the Killing profit he made on a certain investment

And quietly, almost unnoticed at first—FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) begins to build. You start tracking the markets more frequently, search for the spare cash to deploy or liquidate the slow movers of your portfolio, emotions overtake strategy, and one day you participate in that rally that is at lifetime high

FOMO is outsourcing your analysis to someone else's emotions.

FOMO in investing is not driven by lack of knowledge. It is driven by:

  • Seeing others generate higher short-term returns
  • Comparing portfolio performance with recent winners
  • The fear of “being left behind” during a rally

This often leads to a shift in behaviour:

  • Moving away from well-structured portfolios
  • Increasing exposure to high-performing sectors
  • Investing lump sums at elevated valuations

The intent is simple: participate in the upside. But this seemingly simple intent can carry hidden risks

If you ever face this situation in a market rally, ask yourself few questions

  • Does this investment align with my long-term financial plan?
  • Have I done my research or am I investing purely on emotion?
  • Am I paying a fair price for the investment?
  • Is this investment aligned to my asset allocation principles?
  • Am I comfortable with the risk I’m taking in this rally?
  • Do I have a plan if the market corrects tomorrow?

Market rallies are not the problem. They are a natural and essential part of wealth creation. the challenge lies in how investors respond to them. Rising markets test patience just as much as falling markets test resilience. Because in both scenarios, emotional decisions can derail long-term outcomes.

Always remember, FOMO is subtle. It builds gradually and often feels justified in the moment.

But long-term wealth is not created by reacting to market excitement—it is created by staying aligned with a well-defined strategy.
